Men’s Golf Closes Gap with Strong Afternoon Round at Chatham Hills
October 14, 2018 | Men's Golf
Cardinals matched tournament leader Marquette for third-best score in round two
WESTFIELD, Ind. -- Only one team had a higher score than the Ball State men's golf team in Sunday's morning round at the Chatham Hills Collegiate, but only two squads were better than the Cardinals in the afternoon.
Ball State is right at even par after a 36-hole day at The Club at Chatham Hills, good enough for seventh place and just two stokes out of the top 5.
Marquette (-18) leads the 11-team field with one round left to play, while Northwestern (-16) is two shots back. They are the two highest-ranked teams in the field, with both among the top 35 in the Golfweek rankings. Tournament host Indiana (-13) is third.
Ball State was 4 under par as a team in the afternoon round, led by a 3-under 69 from Jack Cunningham. Yianni Kostouros (70) and Keegan Bronnenberg (71) were also in red figures for round two, helping the Cardinals match tournament leader Marquette for the third-best score of the afternoon. Only Northwestern (-8) and Indiana (-7) were better.
Bronnenberg, who was even for his morning round, carded a 36-hole total of 143 (-1) for the day to lead the Cardinals in a tie for 16th place, one shot ahead of Cunningham. Timothy Wiseman led Ball State with a 71 in the morning round, as the Cardinals shot 294 before going 10 strokes lower in the afternoon.
Ball State's freshmen were notable Sunday, with Kostouros leading the field in par-5 scoring (-7) and Joey Ranieri leading all players in par-3 scoring (-3). Ranieri provided a counting score of 74 in both rounds, while Kostouros' afternoon 70 came on the heels of a morning 76 that featured six birdies but also a double, triple and quadruple bogey. Throw out those three holes, and Kostouros would be 7 under for the tournament.
A total of 24 players are under par at Chatham Hills. Northwestern's David Nyfjall (-11) will take a four-shot lead into Monday's final round. Ball State will go off the 10th tee starting at 8:30 a.m. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
