Cardinals struggle with turnovers against hot-shooting Miami squad
OXFORD, Ohio -- Sophomore center Trey Moses made his first nine shots from the floor and scored 18 points Saturday, but the Ball State men's basketball team suffered a 71-53 setback at Miami.
Â
Darrian Ringo led Miami with 21 points and hit 5 of 5 from 3-point range as the RedHawks improved to (10-9, 3-3 MAC). The Cardinals fell to 12-7 (3-3 MAC) with the loss.
Â
Head Coach James Whitford on the Loss
"(Ringo) was great. That was a big story of the game. They had a good shooting day; obviously, we had a lot to do with it. But all credit to them and certainly to Darrian Ringo, who played a great game."
Â
Inside the Numbers
• Moses finished 9 for 10 from the floor and missed his first shot of the day with 1:16 to play. Dating back to the previous game, Moses made 13 consecutive attempts from the floor. That tied the school record for most consecutive makes. Clement Murrell made 13 straight over two games in 1979.
Â
• Junior point guard Tayler Persons joined Moses in double figures with 12 points.
Â
• Junior guard Sean Sellers matched his career high with 10 rebounds to lead the Cardinals on the glass.
Â
• Ringo had made only 13 of 43 attempts from beyond the arc this season before draining all five he attempted Saturday. Miami finished 11 for 23 from 3-point range as a team, while the Cardinals hit only 3 of 12.
Â
• Logan McLane added 20 points for Miami and made 8 of 12 shots from the floor. He scored 12 of those points in the span of 3 minutes early in the second half as Miami took control.
Â
• Ball State matched its season high with 21 turnovers. It was the most giveaways for the Cardinals in a MAC game this season.
Â
• BSU outscored Miami 38-16 in the paint but could not overcome the turnovers and Miami's 3-point shooting.
Â
• Whitford on the Cardinals' turnovers: "It was a credit to Darrian Ringo. He really took us out of a lot of stuff, and we really struggled passing and catching."
Â
How It Happened
• Led by Moses, Ball State got off to a good start and led by as many as five points in the opening 10 minutes of the game.
Â
• After a Zach Gunn free throw put the Cardinals ahead 19-14 at the 10:32 mark, Miami proceeded to rattle off the next 13 points. The RedHawks never trailed again.
Â
• Ball State cut it to two on a Kyle Mallers 3-pointer, but Miami built its lead up to 37-30 by halftime. The RedHawks pushed the lead to double digits on McLane's 3 with 17:10 to play, and it stayed there the rest of the way.
Â
Whitford on the Cardinals' performance: "We were a divided team tonight. When things were going bad, our body language was bad across the board. I didn't feel like we responded to the adversity of the game well."

Ball State will visit Kent State for a 7 p.m. tip Tuesday. It is the first of two meetings between the teams this season. The Cardinals will host the Golden Flashes for a 9 p.m. tip Friday, Feb. 9. The game was recently moved to that time slot for television on ESPNU.
