Gymnastics Travels to the Nation's Capital for Tri-Meet

MUNCIE, Ind.,-- In front of a sold out crowd, the Cardinals totaled a 194.475 to open the 2018 season with a second place finish at University of Kentucky's Excite Night. Kentucky won the meet with a 196.075, while George Washington placed third with 193.775 and in fourth place Southeast Missouri posted a 189.675 respectfully. The Cardinals continue its road competition at George Washington to face the Colonials, Cornell and Penn Sunday, Jan. 14 at 1:00 p.m. EST in the Charles E. Smith Center.
"It will be fun to go back to the Nation's Capital," head coach Joanna Saleem said. "Not only for the freshmen who haven't been there before, but also for the entire team to be able to compete against other competitive teams in another high energy atmosphere. Our goal this weekend is to be able to build upon what we did last weekend, focusing on our gymnastics and having fun throughout the meet."

In Rupp Arena, the Cardinals opened the 2018 season on beam earning a collective team score of 48.375. Freshman, Vicky Garcia set a personal record tying with senior Baylee Bell who notched a 9.725.

On floor Freshman Tia Kiaku placed third with a score of 9.850, setting another personal record for the night.

On vault, Kaitlyn Menzione stood sixth with a score of 9.775.

Maddie Macdonald earned a new personal record tying for first place on bars scoring a 9.850. Menzione claimed second with a 9.825 and Jordyn Penny took fourth with a 9.800.

Menzione stood second in the all-around competition matching her personal record of 38.975.
The team will travel to Raleigh, N.C., Jan. 20, to compete against NC State and William and Mary.
