Three Things to Know:
1. Red zone efficiency was a major focus for the offense heading into 2017. The Cardinals rank second in the MAC with 14 red zone touchdowns and second in red zone touchdown percentage (82.4) in 2017. Last year, Ball State converted just 58.2 percent of its red zone trips into touchdowns, which ranked eighth in the league.
2. In both of Ball State's losses this season, the Cardinals have held the lead with less than five minutes remaining in regulation.
3. This is the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams. Ball State lost all five games to MAC West opponents a year ago. However, three of the five losses were by a touchdown or less. Western Michigan has won three straight in the series.
By the Numbers:
5 – RB Malik Dunner leads the team with five touchdowns. He has scored four times via a rush and once via a kick return.
8 – Ball State's defense has forced eight fumbles in the first four games. However, the Cardinals have only recovered two of those loose balls.
19 – Number of first time starters in 2017 for the Cardinals, regardless of class. That number is the second highest in the nation (Baylor – 21).
