Cardinals looking to climb leaderboard with one round to play
DALLAS -- Michael Makris and Johnny Watts made five birdies each Monday for the Ball State men's golf team in round two of the Trinity Forest Invitational.
The pair has combined for 19 birdies through the first 36 holes, tying for the most of any duo in the tournament. That's among a 13-team field that includes eight top-25 squads from a year ago and six that played in the 2017 NCAA Nationals.
Makris fired an even-par 71 to lead the Cardinals in Monday's round. Watts joined Michael VanDeventer and Timothy Wiseman in shooting 74 as Ball State turned in a team round of 293 (+9).
While there were birdies out there, it was a grinding kind of day for Ball State. VanDeventer bounced back well from a double bogey start, while Watts held his round together despite playing his middle four holes in 6 over par.
The Cardinals' two-day total of 581 (+13) has them in 11th place with one round to play at Trinity Forest Golf Club. They are within striking distance of several teams directly above them -- Clemson (+7), Iowa (+8) and SMU (+10).
First-round leader Florida (-8) maintained a share of the lead, while Auburn (-8) jumped up to join the Gators at the top. USC's Justin Suh and Auburn's Brandon Mancheno share the individual lead at 6 under par.
Ball State's senior trio of Makris, VanDeventer and Watts own identical scores of 145 (+3) through two rounds and are tied for 37th place. Wiseman is just one shot behind them.
The final round of the event will be played Tuesday. Ball State is grouped with SMU and Kansas State, going off the 10th tee starting at 9:20 a.m. CT (10:20 ET).
