Cardinals enter final round in second place, chasing host Colonels
RICHMOND, Ky. -- The Ball State men's golf team will enter the final round of the EKU Intercollegiate four shots off the pace on a tight leaderboard.
Eleven teams are within 10 shots of first-place Eastern Kentucky after Saturday's opening 36 holes at the University Club at Arlington. The Cardinals are first among that group after posting a two-round total of 566 (+6).
Johnny Watts opened with a career-best round of 65 (-5) in the morning and followed it with a 71 to find himself tied atop the individual leaderboard at 4 under par. He shares the lead with Cleveland State's Blake Prince heading into Sunday's final round.
Watts made seven birdies in his opening 18 holes and reached as low as 6 under par during the second round before a pair of late bogeys. He was one of three Cardinals to record scores of par or better in the morning, joining Timothy Wiseman (-1) and Michael VanDeventer (E).
Wiseman (T23) and VanDeventer (T30) also finished the day among the top 30 in the field of 90 players. Freshman Jack Cunningham provided a pair of counting scores on the day and is tied for 43rd.
Ball State's team total of 278 in the morning matched the fifth-best in program history, while Watts' 65 tied for the fourth-best by a BSU golfer.
The Cardinals held the lead after round one, but tournament host Eastern Kentucky moved to the top with an afternoon round of 278, matching Ball State's morning score. BSU gave a few shots away on the closing holes of the day as the Colonels took hold of first place.
Ball State and EKU will be grouped together for the final round along with Morehead State. The action begins Sunday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
