Men’s Tennis Closes First Day of Purdue Fall Invite

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team opened its 2017 fall schedule Friday morning at the Purdue Fall Invitational. The Cardinals won nine first round singles matches and closed out the day with five wins in double action.
In Flight A singles action, Nemanja Guzina defeated Illinois State's Igor Kolaric in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5. Two players advanced for the Cardinals in Flight C, Jan Jirus took down Miles McDowall of UWGB, 6-3, 6-3 while Conner Andersen came out on top with his 6-4, 6-3 victory over Bucknell's Max Kane.
Newcomer Bryce Bonin earned his first victory for Ball State after winning a 6-3, 7-6 (3) match over Tony Leto of UWGB in the Flight D bracket while teammate Tom Carney also advanced in the same flight after posting a three set thriller against IUPUI's Furman Siddiki, 4-6. 6-3, 6-2.
Both Khamasi Muhiga and Luke Weise found success in Flight E competition as both Cardinals' defeated their respective opponents. Alec Robillard and Collin Rigney closed out the last singles Flight with straight set victories against players from SDSU.
In doubles, Nemanja Guzina paired up with teammate Thibault Negri for two wins in Flight A. The twosome defeated Chicago State 7-6 (2) and then advanced to the semifinal round after their 6-3 take down over host Purdue. In Flight B, Chris Adams and Bonin also advanced to the semifinals on Saturday after posting wins over UWGB and Illinois State. Two more doubles teams moved on in their Flight C bracket and will play against each other tomorrow. Carney and Luke Wiese will take on Muhiga and Rigney Saturday in the semifinals.
