Soccer Tabbed Preseason Favorite for MAC West, Tournament Titles

Cardinals seeking to add another championship in 2017
MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State soccer team was picked to repeat as the Mid-American Conference West Division champion in the league's preseason coaches' poll announced Monday.

The Cardinals, who have won the outright MAC regular season championship each of the past two seasons, received seven of the 12 available first-place votes in the West Division. Central Michigan, picked to finish second, garnered three first-place votes, while Western Michigan and Northern Illinois had one each.

Ball State was also chosen as the preseason favorite to win the MAC Tournament, receiving four votes to edge Central Michigan by one.

Defending tournament champion Kent State was selected as the favorite to win the East Division, while Buffalo was picked second.

Ball State is 19-2-1 in conference play over the past two seasons and 28-6-6 overall. The 19 MAC wins match the most by any program over a two-year period in league history.

The Cardinals are slated to open the regular season this week, hosting Fort Wayne at 5 p.m. Friday at the Briner Sports Complex. They will then travel to face 18th-ranked Notre Dame at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in South Bend, Indiana.
