Top Stories of 2016-17: Women's Tennis Back to Back MAC Titles
August 01, 2017 | Women's Tennis
MUNCIE, Ind. – Another athletic year is in the books for the Cardinals. Ball State student-athletes, coaches and teams accomplished several notable feats in 2016-17 and left their mark on the university.
Through much discussion, BallStateSports.com has identified the top 10 storylines of the year. We will reveal the storylines one-by-one each week for the next 10 weeks. In early August, once they have all been announced, fans will be able to vote for their favorite stories of the year.
The stories will be revealed in chronological order, beginning with the fall season and running through the spring. We continue this week with a look back at the women's tennis team making program history with back-to-back Mid-American Conference Regular Season Titles ...
The Ball State women's tennis turned in another historical season by winning its second-consecutive Mid-American Conference regular season title with a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Akron on April 22 at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
After losing a close doubles point to the Zips, the Cardinals were force to win four of the six courts in singles play. Audrey Berger managed to earn the first point for Ball State with a straight set take down over the Zips Luisa Echeverry at No. 5 in the lineup. The momentum began to swing the Cardinals way as Isabelle Dohanics then registered a 6-3, 6-0 defeat over Shannon Newnes on court No. 5 to give Ball State a 2-1 edge over Akron.
The Zips then knotted the match 2-2 after Carmen Blanco fell at the No. 1 spot to Sophia Geier. After that, Toni Ormond won a nail biter on court three to put the Cardinals back on top with just two courts remaining.
The MAC regular season title came down to either Peyton Gollhofer or Rosalinda Calderon who had taken their respective opponents to third sets. Calderon battled to the very end but lost her match on six to leave it in the hands of Gollhofer. It wasn't looking good for Ball State as Gollhofer found herself trailing 4-2 in the final stanza. However she fought back to take a 5-4 lead. Quickly, Akron answered to make it 5-5, but Gollhofer toughed it out and clinched the match by a score of 7-5.
As the regular season champion, Ball State earned the right to host next year's MAC Tournament again. The Cardinals also ended the MAC season with a perfect 8-0 ledger for the first time in program history.
