MUNCIE, Ind. -- Another athletic year is in the books for the Cardinals. Ball State student-athletes, coaches and teams accomplished several notable feats in 2016-17 and left their mark on the university.
Through much discussion, BallStateSports.com has identified the top 10 storylines of the year. We are revealing the storylines one-by-one each week over a period of 10 weeks. In early August, once they have all been announced, fans will be able to vote for their favorite stories of the year.
The stories are being revealed in chronological order, beginning with the fall season and running through the spring. We continue this week with a look back at the women's golf team winning in Virginia and Kentucky in the same week …
Women's Golf Wins Twice in Six Days
Upon first glance at the 2017 spring schedule for the Ball State women's golf team, the final week of March looked like a daunting task.
Two 54-hole tournaments over a period of six days, starting on a Monday in Virginia and concluding Saturday in Kentucky. That sounds like a lot for a sport accustomed to longer breaks between events.
But the Cardinals took the test head on, playing their best golf of the year on the way to winning both tournaments. To top it off, BSU also boasted the individual medalist at both.
It started at the 22-team Kingsmill Intercollegiate in Williamsburg, Virginia. Ball State grabbed the lead with the low round of the event in the second round and then held off tournament host William & Mary on the final day. Allison Lindley's par on the final hole locked up a one-shot victory. It also secured a share of medalist honors for Lindley, marking her first collegiate victory.
Just a few days later, it was Sydney Anderson's turn to claim her first victory at the EKU Colonel Classic in Richmond, Kentucky. This time, Ball State won going away. The Cardinals led wire-to-wire, leading by 11 shots entering the final round and pushing the final margin to 13 over second-place Ohio. Anderson overcame a two-shot deficit early in the final round and never surrendered the lead.
When the Cardinals looked back on that six-day stretch, what once looked like a daunting task had become one of the most successful weeks in memory.
