Maurer Wins State Open, Three Cardinals in Top 5
July 14, 2017 | Men's Golf
Rising seniors Makris (third), VanDeventer (fifth) finish strong
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Ball State alumnus Brian Maurer won his second Indiana Open Championship this week, while a pair of current Cardinals joined him in the top 5.
Â
Maurer finished with a 54-hole total of 7-under par 207 in the rain-shortened event at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex. Also the champion in 2011, he led wire to wire this week, holding off Michael Davan by two shots.
Â
Rising Ball State senior Michael Makris tied for third at 4 under, while classmate Michael VanDeventer tied for fifth at 3 under. Makris, who won last month's Indiana Amateur Championship, finished as the top amateur again in this week's field.
Â
A total of 11 current or former Cardinals made the cut this week. The first two rounds were split between the Ackerman-Allen Course and the Kampen Course, with the action returning to Ackerman-Allen for Friday's third round. Heavy rains forced the second round to be played over three days and the event to be shortened to 54 holes.
Â
Maurer, a Richmond, Indiana, native, has played professionally since completing his Ball State career in 2009. He was an All-Mid-American Conference First Team selection and the Cardinals' Most Valuable Player as a senior.
Â
Makris and VanDeventer are part of a veteran group returning for Ball State next season as the Cardinals look to build on a second-place finish at this year's MAC Championships.
