Cardinals Sweep Doubleheader From Toledo, 5-3 and 10-5
May 06, 2017 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State baseball team returned to Ball Diamond at First Merchants Ballpark Complex for the first time in three weeks and celebrated by taking two games from Toledo Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals won by scores of 5-3 and 10-5. With the two victories, Ball State improves to 24-22 overall and 11-9 in Mid-American Conference action.
Junior pitcher Colin Brockhouse made an impact in game one on the mound and at the plate. The righty went five innings and held Toledo (14-32, 7-10) to just one run on two hits. He picked up his first win since March 4 against Chicago State. At the plate, he led off the bottom of the second inning with a home run over the left field fence to give the Cardinals a 3-0 lead.
Ball State added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to extend its cushion to 5-1. Senior Alex Maloney was credited with an RBI groundout in the sixth and junior Seth Freed added another run with a perfect squeeze bunt in the seventh.
Toledo made the Cardinals sweat in the top of the ninth. The Rockets scored twice and loaded the bases, but relief pitcher John Baker finally ended the rally with his 10th strikeout, his season high.
In game two, Toledo quickly jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings. Five different Rockets contributed RBIs, which was jump-started by Matt Hansen's RBI double in the first inning.
After being held to just one hit in the first three innings, Ball State exploded for five runs in the fourth to even the game. Freed ignited the big inning with a laser shot over the right field wall. Senior Matt Eppers kept the inning alive with a two-out RBI double to slash the deficit to 5-2. Fellow senior Caleb Stayton then took the very next pitch well over the right field wall for a three-run home run to level the contest.
Ball State finally broke the tie in the eighth inning. Junior Jeff Riedel ended the top of the eighth inning with a highlight reel double play. The right fielder made a diving catch coming forward for the second out and proceeded to double off Michael Ryan at second base.
Riedel then led off the bottom of the frame with a triple off the right center wall. Two batters later, Eppers put Ball State on top for good with an RBI double over the third base bag. Fellow senior Sean Kennedy added a two-run single while sophomore Trent Theisen chipped in with an RBI single as the Cardinals batted around in the eighth.
Junior Brendan Burns was nearly perfect for the Cardinals in relief. The righty tossed the final five innings and held Toledo to two hits to earn his second win of the season.
Seven Cardinals notched at least two hits in game two led by sophomore Roman Baisa's three base knocks.
This was Ball State's fourth doubleheader sweep this spring.
The two teams will conclude the series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
