Junior golfer placed third to lead Cardinals at MAC Championships

MUNCIE, Ind. -- Fresh off a third-place finish at the Mid-American Conference Championships, Ball State golfer Johnny Watts was named the MAC Male Scholar Athlete of the Week.

A junior from Fishers, Indiana, Watts owns a 3.379 GPA as a finance major. He earned All-MAC honors for the third time in his career at last week's conference championships.

Watts recorded his second top-3 finish in three starts at the event. The 2015 champion carded a 72-hole total of 284 (-4), including a pair of 69's in the opening two rounds. He held a share of the 36-hole lead and remained in the top 3 the rest of the way.

Watts led the field for the week with 52 pars, playing steady golf throughout. He led Ball State to a runner-up finish as a team, marking the Cardinals' best finish at the event since 2011. BSU finished behind only 12th-ranked Kent State.
