Cardinals welcome pair to talented roster for 2017-18 season
MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State men's golf program is adding two of the state's top players from the class of 2016 with the signing of transfers Keegan Bronnenberg and Tyler Green to scholarship papers.
Bronnenberg, a Muncie Central product, returns home after beginning his career at Fort Wayne. He will be eligible starting next spring. Green, a product of Columbia City, transferred from Purdue and will be immediately eligible for the fall season.
"We are really excited to add Keegan and Tyler to the family," Ball State coach Mike Fleck said. "We have an experienced group of upperclassmen returning along with three talented freshmen. Adding Keegan and Tyler to a talented roster will create competitiveness from top to bottom."
Bronnenberg won this week's Indiana PGA Southern Open, firing a 4-under par 68 and defeating now teammate Timothy Wiseman in a playoff. He played in four fall events for Fort Wayne with a 75.55 stroke average before enrolling in the spring at Ball State.
A two-time all-state selection at Muncie Central, Bronnenberg won individual sectional and regional championships as a junior and senior. He qualified for the IHSAA state tournament three times and posted two top-6 finishes, including a tie for third as a junior.
Bronnenberg also captured the Indiana PGA Northern Open in 2015. He won the Indiana Junior Golf Program Player of the Year Award back-to-back in 2015 and 2016.
"Keegan had a successful start to collegiate golf last fall at Fort Wayne and is fresh off a win at the Indiana PGA Southern Open," Fleck said. "He will be eligible to compete for us in the spring of 2018, and we will get him going in the fall, pushing the guys on an everyday basis."
Green was a regional champion for Columbia City as a senior and a sectional champion as a sophomore, winning both titles by four strokes. He played in the IHSAA state finals twice, earned all-state honors as a junior and was a three-time all-conference selection.
Some of Green's highlights from his junior golf career include a win at the Hoosier Junior Championship, a runner-up finish at the Boys State Junior Championship and third-place results at the AJGA's Under Armour/Jeff Overton Championship and the Indiana Section Junior PGA Championship.
"Tyler is a talented and experienced player who we actively recruited as a junior golfer," Fleck said. "Tyler will add depth to a roster full of guys ready to compete, and he has had many competitive experiences with most of the guys on the team. He will be eligible to compete in the fall, and we are looking for him to contribute right away."
With the addition of Bronnenberg and Green, Ball State will have five newcomers on next year's roster. The program signed a trio of high school seniors in the fall -- Jack Cunningham (Vincennes, Ind./Lincoln HS), Miles Jena (Middletown, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick HS) and CJ Jones (Frankfort, Ky./Franklin County HS).
That crew will join an experienced Cardinals roster, which is set to return four golfers who competed in every event this season. BSU recently wrapped up its campaign with a second-place finish at the MAC Championships.
