Cardinals Split Doubleheader at Northern Illinois
April 28, 2017 | Baseball
DeKALB, Ill. – The Ball State baseball team returned to league action Friday afternoon and split a doubleheader at Northern Illinois. The Cardinals took game one, 4-1, but fell in the second game, 6-3.
Seniors Alex Maloney and Sean Kennedy provided the big hits for Ball State (22-21, 9-8 MAC) in the opener. Maloney gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning with a two-out, two-run double to the gap in left center field.
Northern Illinois (13-28, 7-7) responded with its only run in the bottom of the third inning. From there, reliever Nick Floyd made the lead hold up. He equaled a personal high by throwing five innings out of the bullpen and allowing just one hit. Sophomore Evan Marquardt pitched the final two innings to earn the save.
Kennedy gave Ball State two insurance runs in the seventh. With two outs and two runners on base, Kennedy singled to right center. Both runners would score on the play due to a Northern Illinois error.
Senior Caleb Stayton piled up three hits in the win and reached base four times. Kennedy, along with senior Matt Eppers and sophomore Griffin Hulecki each tallied a pair of hits.
Back-to-back home runs from Tommy Hook and Tommy Szczasny propelled the Huskies to the win in game two. Ball State held a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the fifth inning only to see Hook notch a three-run home run and Szczasny follow with a solo shot to turn the game around.
The five runs would be enough for Northern Illinois. Pitchers Nathan Thomas and George Faue held Ball State to five hits, the team's second lowest production of the month. Kennedy was the lone bright spot at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the ninth inning.
The two teams will attempt to conclude the series tomorrow morning, April 29, beginning at 11 a.m. ET (weather permitting).
