Men’s Golf Heads Back to Ohio for MAC Championships
April 27, 2017 | Men's Golf
Cardinals coming off solid performance last weekend at Ohio State
LIVE SCORING
The Ball State men's golf team heads to Nashport, Ohio, for the Mid-American Conference Championships, which begin Friday at The Virtues Golf Club.
The 72-hole event opens with the first two rounds Friday, followed by one round each on Saturday and Sunday. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
Ball State's lineup will feature four golfers with MAC Championships experience – juniors Johnny Watts, Michael VanDeventer and Michael Makris plus sophomore Timothy Wiseman. Each of those four has been the Cardinals' top finisher in at least two events this year.
Sophomore Colin Proctor, who has played each the past three events leading up to this week, will make his first appearance at the league tournament to round out Ball State's lineup. He will lead the Cardinals off the 10th tee Friday at 8:30 a.m.
Watts won the MAC Championships as a freshman in 2015 at the Mayfield Sand Ridge Club to earn an NCAA Regional berth. He leads the Cardinals this year with a 73.17 scoring average and four top-10 finishes.
VanDeventer won just two weeks ago at the Earl Yestingsmeier Memorial Invitational, where the Cardinals placed four golfers in the top 15.
Ball State is coming off a seventh-place finish out of 15 teams at last week's Robert Kepler Intercollegiate on the Scarlet Course at Ohio State University Golf Club. The Cardinals defeated five of the other six MAC teams in the field, finishing behind only tournament runner-up Kent State.
The 12th-ranked Golden Flashes have won seven of the past eight MAC Championships, including last year at Highland Meadows Golf Club. They are the highest-rated team in this year's field, followed by Eastern Michigan and Ball State.
The last time The Virtues hosted the MAC Championships was 2013, when the course was known as Longaberger Golf Club. The Cardinals finished third that year on their way to an at-large bid into the NCAA Regionals and eventually a spot in the Nationals.
