Cardinals finish second among seven MAC teams at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ball State men's golf team wrapped up the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate in seventh place Sunday, defeating five of the other six Mid-American Conference teams in the field.

The Cardinals posted a final-round 308 to finish with a 54-hole total of 914 (+62) on the Scarlet Course at Ohio State University Golf Club.

Michael VanDeventer and Michael Makris led Ball State with rounds of 75 (+4) Sunday, while the Cardinals also counted a 78 from Johnny Watts and an 80 from Timothy Wiseman.

For the second day in a row, the course played to a stroke average higher than 77 for the field.

Illinois, the nation's 10th-ranked team, finished atop the leaderboard of 15 MAC and Big Ten squads with a total of 864 (+12). No. 12 Kent State, which led by one entering the final round, finished second at 874 (+22).

Dylan Meyer of Illinois claimed medalist honors by closing with a 66, the lowest round of the day by five shots, to finish as the only player in red figures at 2 under par.

Watts finished as the top Ball State player in 27th place at 227 (+14). VanDeventer (+18, T36), Makris (+19, T39) and Wiseman (+19, T39) all finished with one shot of each other, while Colin Proctor (+26, T64) rounded out the lineup.

The Kepler served as the Cardinals' final tune-up for the MAC Championships, which begin Friday at The Virtues Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio.
