Toledo Holds On To Hand Softball a 5-2 Senior Day Loss
April 22, 2017 | Softball
MUNCIE, Ind. – In another down-to-the-wire finish, the Ball State softball team brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning, but visiting Toledo was able to hold on and spoil the Cardinals' senior day with a 5-2 victory Saturday at the Softball Field at First Merchants Ballpark Complex.
Â
Despite the loss, the Cardinals (29-21; 13-5 Mid-American Conference) picked up their sixth MAC series victory of the season courtesy of a doubleheader sweep of the Rockets (21-30; 9-9 MAC) on Friday.
Â
One day after throwing Ball State's first no-hitter since the 2010 season, junior pitcher Carolyn Wilmes (Evansville, Ind./Matre Dei) returned to the circle looking for her eighth MAC victory of the season.
Â
Unfortunately, the Rockets had other plans and scored single runs in each of the first three innings to pull ahead 3-0. Toledo would go on to add two more runs in the top of the fourth, building a 5-0 advantage.
Â
After stranding five runners on base over the first two innings, the Ball State offense was finally able to connect for a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, cutting the deficit to 5-2. Freshman left fielder Haley Dominique (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) provided the biggest hit of the frame with a two-out, two-run double to the fence in right-center field.
Â
Junior first baseman Danae King (Glendale, Ariz./Phoenix College) and sophomore catcher Olivia Huffman (Woodbury, Minn./South Dakota) scored on Dominique's double after reaching base via a single and fielder's choice, respectively.
Â
After being retired in order in both the fifth and sixth innings, the Cardinals' offense attempted to mount one last comeback in the bottom of the seventh. Junior pinch hitter Cadie O'Donnell (Salina, Kan./Barton C.C.) opened the inning with an infield single and junior second baseman Maddy Labrador (Lexington, S.C. / Spartanburg Methodist) followed with a one-out single. Unfortunately, a fly out to center field and a groundout to second stymied the comeback attempt and gave the Rockets a 5-2 victory in the series finale.
Â
Dominique led the Ball State offense with a pair of hits in the game, including her two-run double in the fourth. Senior right fielder Amanda Arnett (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) also tallied a hit in her final game at the Softball Field at First Merchants Ballpark Complex.
Â
Arnett and classmate Rachel Houck (Greenfield, Ind./Louisville) were honored following the conclusion of Saturday's game. Both players entered the game ranked in the top 11 in program history in home runs, with Houck being 10th (18) and Arnett 11th (15).
Â
The Ball State softball team returns to action next Friday (April 28), when it opens a three-game set at Central Michigan with a scheduled 3 p.m. first pitch. The teams will also play a Saturday (April 29) doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
