Sean Kennedy Has Record-Setting Day in Baseball Sweep
April 15, 2017 | Baseball
The Cardinals (18-18, 6-6 MAC) have now won seven straight overall and six consecutive league games.
Senior infielder Sean Kennedy was the star in game one going 5-for-5 with three home runs, a triple, a double and nine RBIs. He set a program single-game record with 17 total bases. Kennedy's home run and RBI numbers were each one shy of the Ball State record. Brad Miller hit four home runs against Valparaiso in 2004 while Jason Meier racked up 10 RBIs against Valpo in 1997.
Kennedy homered in the first, fourth and fifth innings. Fellow senior Caleb Stayton hit a three-run shot to center field in the second, his first of the season, and sophomore Griffin Hulecki added another home run as part of Ball State's six-run fifth inning.
Stayton was overshadowed by Kennedy's performance, but finished 3-for-4 with a home run, five RBIs and four runs scored.
Senior lefty Kevin Marnon notched his fourth win by tossing 6.1 innings and holding BGSU to four runs.
Bowling Green (9-22, 4-8) jumped out of the gates quickly in game two, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning, highlighted by Cam Daugherty's two-run long ball over the left field fence.
However, Ball State's bats stayed hot and the Cardinals responded with one in the first and three more in the second to even the score at 4-all.
Ball State then took control of the game by batting around in the third and scoring seven times. Hulecki, senior Matt Eppers and junior Jeff Riedel tallied run-producing hits. Senior Alex Maloney capped the inning with a two-run home run, his sixth of the season.
Freshman pitcher John Baker earned the win as he threw 4.1 innings of relief, struck out four and limited Bowling Green to one run.
Next up for Ball State is a non-conference game at Purdue Tuesday night, April 18. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
