Baseball Pushes Winning Streak to Five Games
April 14, 2017 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. – Starting pitcher BJ Butler threw eight plus innings while Jeff Riedel and Caleb Stayton combined for four RBIs to lead the Ball State baseball team to a 7-4 win over Bowling Green Friday afternoon at First Merchants Ballpark Complex.
With the win, the Cardinals (16-18, 4-6 MAC) extend their season-best winning streak to five games.
Ball State trailed 3-2 going into the bottom of the fifth, but the Cardinals rallied with two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth inning to take the lead for good. Stayton's RBI single just over the first base bag tied the score at 3-all. Fellow senior Sean Kennedy followed with a bloop single to right field to score Riedel and make the score, 4-3.
Butler, who gave up a run in the fourth and two in the fifth to Bowling Green (9-20, 4-6), worked out of a jam in the sixth. After the Falcons put runners on first and second with nobody out, Butler responded with a fly out, strikeout and ground out to end the threat.
In the bottom of the frame, Riedel placed a perfect bunt down the first base line for a hit that also scored junior Colin Brockhouse to extend the cushion to 5-3.
Senior Matt Eppers and Riedel chipped in with RBIs in the eighth inning to put the game out of reach.
Eppers finished 3-for-4 and is batting .762 (16-of-21) over the last five games. Riedel scored twice and drove in two runs. Stayton's RBI single allowed the first baseman to extend his hitting streak to eight games. The Cardinals finished with 12 hits and improved to 10-0 when tallying at least 10 base knocks.
Butler struck out seven batters, walked just one and allowed three earned runs. The righty has six quality starts this season.
The two teams will conclude the series tomorrow, April 15, with a doubleheader. Game one is set to begin at noon.
