April 10, 2017 | Men's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) will be inducting the first ever Hall of Fame class in 2017. The MIVA announced the list of 11 members of the inaugural class Monday afternoon (April 10).
The list is made up of the most influential student-athletes, coaches and administrators in the league's history. Two Cardinals made that impressive list: Dr. Don Shondell and Jerre McManama.
Dr. Don Shondell, a 1952 Ball State alumnus, established a legacy almost unmatched by any other individual in college volleyball history. His career has been long and varied as a coach, professor and author. The founder of Ball State men's volleyball, Shondell formed the first club team at Ball State in 1960 and would spend the next four years working tirelessly overcoming opposition to make men's volleyball a varsity sport at Ball State. As head coach he accumulated a career record of 769-280-6 (.732), affording him the second highest number of wins in NCAA men's volleyball history. Dr. Shondell co-founded the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association and went on to win 19 MIVA titles in 34 seasons. The Hall of Fame Coach also holds the record for most career wins by a Ball State coach in any sport and was named MIVA Coach of the Year on eight different occasions.
Jerre McManama, a 1961 Ball State alumnus, is being recognized for his time at Ball State and Indiana Tech (Fort Wayne). McManama was Ball State women's volleyball head coach from 1983-1988 along with an assistant coach for the Ball State men's volleyball team from 1970-86. Prior to his time at Ball State, McManama spent seven years at Indiana Tech as the head coach where he was the NAIA National Championship runner-up for the President's Volleyball Section Award of Merit. He was a two-time MIVA Coach of the Year and the recipient of the George J. Fisher Leader in Volleyball Award. He was later named as a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from Ball State men's volleyball. In addition, McManama was the co-developer of the box score system for recording volleyball statistics in 1981, and his system is still in use by the NCAA.
The group will be honored the day between the NCAA Semifinals and National Championship match, Friday May 5, in Columbus, Ohio.
