Softball Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader vs. Miami in Walk-off Fashion
April 01, 2017 | Softball
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State softball team saved its best for last, scoring a pair of walk-off wins over defending Mid-American Conference tournament champion Miami Saturday afternoon at the Softball Field at First Merchants Ballpark Complex.
Â
After falling behind 5-0 in the opener, the Cardinals (20-17, 4-1 MAC) rallied for six unanswered runs capped by seventh inning wall-off RBI single from freshman third baseman Janae Hogg (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) to give Ball State a 6-5 victory.
Â
In the nightcap, the RedHawks (17-13, 3-2 MAC) once again struck first with an unearned run in the top of the fourth. However, a seventh inning RBI double from freshman left fielder Haley Dominique (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) tied the score and set up a walk-off two-run home run from senior center fielder Rachel Houck (Greenfield, Ind./Louisville) giving Ball State a 3-1 win.
Â
After giving up five runs over the first two innings of the opener, junior pitcher Carolyn Wilmes (Evansville, Ind./Matre Dei) found her grove in the circle, retiring 14 straight batters and 16 of the final 17 she faced to keep the Cardinals in the game. She also struck out seven batters in the contest to improve to 8-9 on the year.
Â
In the second game, freshman Darcie Huber (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield Central) returned to the circle for the first time since March 11 and did not miss a beat, limiting one of the MAC's top offensive teams to just three hits and one unearned run in improving to 6-5 on the year. She also struck out a career-high eight batters, while issuing just two walks in the game.
Â
Overall, junior second baseman Maddy Labrador (Lexington, S.C./Spartanburg Methodist) led the Ball State offense with four hits and a pair of walks on the day for a .750 on base percentage. She also sparked Ball State's come-back win in the opener with a three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning, her sixth long ball of the season.
Â
Houck finished the day 3-for-7 at the plate, including her 12th double and 10th home run of the season in the second game victory. She also drew a walk in the opener and scored a run in both games.
Â
The Cardinals and RedHawks will close their three-game MAC series Sunday with a scheduled noon first pitch at the Softball Field at First Merchants Ballpark Complex.
Â
GAME 1 RECAP: Ball State 6 – Miami 5
After falling behind 5-0 after two innings, the Cardinals came out determined to turn the game around in the third, starting with Wilmes who struck out the first batter she faced in the top of the inning.
Â
The Ball State offense then came to life in the bottom of the inning, starting with a double to center field from freshman right fielder Kennedy Wynn (New Albany, Ind./New Albany). After a walk to junior shortstop Brittany Hopper (Scottsdale, Ariz./Phoenix College), sophomore catcher Olivia Huffman (Woodbury, Minn./South Dakota) gave the Cardinals runners on the corners with a fielder's choice.
Â
Labrador followed by blasting the first pitch she saw over the fence in right-center field for a three-run home run, cutting the Miami lead to 5-3. The Cardinals were not done there, however, as a two-out walk to Houck and a single by Hogg gave Ball State a pair of baserunners. The inning looked to be over on a fly ball to right field from junior first baseman Danae King (Glendale, Ariz./Phoneix College), however the Miami fielder dropped the catch allowing the fourth run of the inning to score.
Â
While Wilmes was dealing in the circle, the Cardinals continued to chip away at the RedHawks lead in the bottom of the sixth, courtesy of a RBI single to center field from Hopper. Junior pinch runner Cadie O'Donnell (Salina, Kan./Barton CC) scored on the play after replacing sophomore designated player Madison Lee (Cerritos, Calif./Cerritos) who walked, stealing second base and advancing to third on a Wynn groundout.
Â
The Cardinals then completed the come-from-behind victory in the bottom of the seventh. Labrador opened the frame with a walk and was replaced by sophomore pinch runner Aeshia Miles (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill). After a sacrifice bunt from Dominique moved Miles to second, another Miami error on a Houck grounder gave Ball State runners at the corners. Hogg made the RedHawks pay for the mistake, driving a walk-off single into right-center field to bring home Miles and seal the 6-5 victory.
Â
GAME 2 RECAP: Ball State 3 – Miami 1
Miami once again struck first in the nightcap, capitalizing on a Ball State error to score the game's first run in the top of the fourth. However, it was the lone blemish on an outstanding performance by Huber who limited the RedHawks to just three hits and a pair of walks.
Â
Looking to pick up their second MAC series win of the season, the Cardinals were down to their final  two outs in the bottom of the seventh before a Labrador double sparked a seventh inning rally. Dominique followed with a game-tying double of her own to set up the league's most dangerous batter in Houck.
Â
After doubling off the top of the wall in dead center field in the bottom of the fifth inning, Houck made even better contact with a 2-0 pitch from Miami's Jamie Scher in the seventh. This time, she deposited a no-doubter over the fence in right field to give the Cardinals their second come-from-behind win of the day, this time 3-1 over Miami.
