Softball Completes Series Sweep of Miami with 6-3 Victory Sunday
April 02, 2017 | Softball
MUNCIE, Ind. – It was not a walk-off home run, but Janae Hogg's (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) three-run blast in the fifth might as well have been as it deflated Miami and lifted the Ball State softball team to a 6-3 victory Sunday afternoon at the Softball Field at First Merchants Ballpark Complex.
Â
After scoring a pair of come-from-behind, walk-off wins over the defending Mid-American Conference Tournament Champion RedHawks (17-14, 3-3 MAC) Saturday, the Cardinals (21-17, 5-1 MAC) completed the three-game series sweep with Sunday's win.
Â
Hogg provided a bulk of Ball State's offense Sunday, going 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBI and a run scored. She tallied a RBI single in the third inning, leading up to her fourth home run of the season in the fifth. Hogg, who also drove in the game-winning run with a walk-off single in the series opener, leads the Ball State offense with nine RBI in league play.
Â
After two-and-a-half scoreless innings, the Cardinals took their first in-game lead of the series courtesy of a two-run third. Junior second baseman Maddy Labrador (Lexington, S.C./Spartanburg Methodist) started the rally with a single through the left side, and was replaced by junior pinch runner Cadie O'Donnell (Salina, Kan./Barton CC) who stole second for the second time in the series.
Â
After a groundout moved O'Donnell to third, senior center fielder Rachel Houck (Greenfield, Ind./Louisville) smashed her 13th double of the season to drive in the first run of the game. Hogg followed with a RBI single, giving the Cardinals a 2-0 advantage.
Â
The RedHawks retaliated, however, scoring a pair of runs of their own to tie the score at 2-2 in the top of the fourth. The first came on a one-out solo home run by Lauren Anderson. The second came courtesy of a two-out, bases loaded hit batter. However, the Cardinals managed to limit the damage to two runs at junior pitcher Carolyn Wilmes (Evansville, Ind./Matre Dei) entered the game and struck out the first batter she faced to end the rally.
Â
Freshman right fielder Kennedy Wynn (New Albany, Ind./New Albany) wasted little time putting the Cardinals ahead once again, blasting the first pitch of the bottom of the fourth over the fence in left field for her second home run of the season.
Â
Trailing 3-2, the RedHawks answered once again in the top of the fifth, on a one-out walk and a two-out double from Johniann Wall to tie the score at 3-3.
Â
However, the Cardinals countered again with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good. Freshman left fielder Haley Dominique (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) opened the inning with a walk, while a Miami error on a Houck grounder to short gave Ball State a pair of base runners. Hogg followed with her three-run blast to straight away center field to drive in what proved to be the game-winning runs.
Â
From there, Wilmes took control in the circle, retiring the RedHawks in order in both the sixth and seventh innings to pick up her ninth win of the season. Over 3.1 innings of relief work, Wilmes allowed just one hit and one run, while striking out three batters to improve to 9-9 on the season.
Â
Freshman pitcher Alyssa Rothwell (Ashville, Ohio/Teays Valley) started the game in the circle for Ball State and limited the RedHawks to three hits and a pair of earned runs over 3.2 innings of work. She also struck out three batters.
Â
It will be another quick turnaround for the Ball State softball team which hosts Northern Illinois in a MAC doubleheader Tuesday. First pitch of game one is set for 1 p.m. at the Softball Field at First Merchants Ballpark Complex.
