Women's Tennis Wins 4-3 Thriller Against Western Kentucky

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Ball State women's tennis team continues to dominate in spring action after the Cardinals took a 4-3 thriller from Western Kentucky Monday afternoon in Murfreesboro, Tenn. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 10-2 on the season while the Hilltoppers drop to 6-3.
Ball State took an early 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point, which proved to be crucial. The Cardinals nabbed wins at No. 2 and No.1 doubles. The Ball State twosome of Carmen Blanco and Peyton Gollhofer captured a 6-1 decision over Cindy Oest and Natalie De Ugarte on court two. Julia Sbircea and Audrey Berger followed with a 6-3 victory over Christopoulou and Elpida Malamou on the top court to clinch the point.
In singles, Western Kentucky's Monica Malinen downed Isabelle Dohanics 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 4 positon to even the score, 1-1 and then took the lead after Malamou beat Blanco, 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot. After that, Toni Ormond knotted the match 2-2 after taking down Cindy Oest in a three set thriller on court three. But the Hilltoppers regained the lead after Violetta Shatalova beat Rebecca Herrington in three sets at the No. 6 slot.
With the Cardinals trailing 3-2, Ball State's Berger registered a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 win over De Ugarte on court five. Gollhofer then claimed the victory for Ball State on court two after dropping the first set 7-6 (7-4) but fought back in sets two and three to take the match and the final point, 7-5, 6-2.
The Ball State women's tennis team continues spring action when it plays at Butler Wednesday, March 15 at 4 p.m.
