Track & Field Heads to Cincinnati for Oliver Nikoloff Open

MUNCIE, Ind. Â - - It will be another Saturday on the road for the Ball State outdoor track & field team which is slated to compete in 12 events on the second day of the Oliver Nikoloff Open hosted by Cincinnati.

The Cardinals, who will not compete in either of the two women's events Friday, open competition at UC's Gettler Stadium at 11 a.m. Saturday with freshman Kelsey Walters (Troy, Ohio/Troy) competing in the shot put.

Along with the Cardinals and host Bearcats, a total of 11 schools will be represented by at least one athlete on the women's side at the Oliver Nikoloff Open. Those schools include Butler, Dayton, Eastern Kentucky, Indiana (Pa.), IUPUI, Marion (Ind.), Northern Kentucky, Toledo and Xavier.

- Entering the third meet of the outdoor season, Ball State's student-athletes have already accumulated six individual event wins and 19 career-best performances.

- Leading the way for the Cardinals after two outdoor meets is sophomore Regan Lewis (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield-Central) who cleared a career best outdoor height of 1.70m to place second in the high jump at the 2017 Adidas Raleigh Relays … The effort currently ranks first in the Mid-American Conference and 14th on the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round qualifying list.

- Thanks to her MAC Championship automatic qualifying mark of 1.70m in the high jump at the Adidas Raleigh Relays, Regan Lewis was named the Mid-American Conference Field Athlete of the Week … She is the first Ball State track & field student-athlete to earn MAC weekly honors this season.

- With a time of 12.08 in the 100m dash at last weekend's Raleigh Relays, sophomore Peyton Stewart (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) enters the week ranked third in the conference in the event … This weekend, Stewart will get her first shot at the 200m dash at the Oliver Nikoloff Open.

- Freshman Brooke Talhelm (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) also turned in an impressive performance last weekend, posting the MAC's third-fastest time in the 1500m run so far this season at 4:35.55 … It's the fastest time for a Ball State runner in the event since Mary-Kate Mellen clocked a time of 4:28.77 to place fifth at the 2013 MAC Outdoor Championships.

- Ball State will be competing in three events for the first time this outdoor season Saturday, with student-athletes entered in the 200m dash, the 5,000m run and the 3,000m steeplechase.
