Cardinals Display Skills at Annual Pro Day

Scouts put 10 former Ball State football players through drills
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ten former Ball State football players worked out in front of NFL scouts Thursday at the Cardinals' annual Pro Day.

Nine seniors from the 2016 team put their skills on display -- defensive backs Corey Hall and Martez Hester, wide receiver KeVonn Mabon, offensive lineman Drake Miller, defensive linemen Joshua Posley and John Whitman III, and linebackers Zack Ryan, Aaron Taylor and Sean Wiggins.

Additionally, Muncie native Jamill Smith, who played for the Cardinals from 2010-13, was back to take part. A former All-MAC receiver and return man, Smith has spent the past three seasons with the Ottawa Redblacks of the Canadian Football League, helping the team to a Grey Cup title last year.

Each participant began the day in the football weight room, rotating between the 225-pound bench press, broad jump and vertical jump. The tests continued on the turf field in the Jo Ann Gora Student Wellness and Recreation Center. The 40-yard dash, shuttle run, three-cone drill and position-specific drills were all measured on the field by scouts from 10 NFL teams.

Thursday's participants are seeking to join a growing group of former Cardinals who have played in the NFL recently. That group currently includes New Orleans Saints receivers Willie Snead IV and Jordan Williams-Lambert and New York Giants quarterback Keith Wenning.

Snead, who exploded two years ago as an undrafted free agent, has caught 141 passes for nearly 1,900 yards and seven touchdowns over two seasons with the Saints.

Earlier Thursday, the current Ball State football team continued spring practice prior to the Pro Day activities. Under second-year head coach Mike Neu, the Cardinals are building toward their annual Spring Game set for Saturday, April 15 at noon.

Ball State will hold its Spring Fan Jam that same day from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., coinciding with home competitions for the baseball, softball, track and field, and men's tennis teams.
