Softball Tops Indiana State in Extra Inning Thriller
March 29, 2017 | Softball
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Led by another strong performance in the circle from sophomore Aeshia Miles (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill), the Ball State softball team closed the non-conference portion of the 2017 season with a thrilling 2-1 (8 inn.) victory at Indiana State Wednesday.
Â
Miles, who celebrated her 20th birthday Tuesday, helped the Cardinals (18-17) hold the 56th-ranked offensive team in the nation in the Sycamores (15-14) to just three hits Wednesday. She also struck out two batters over 6.1 innings of work and allowed just one earned run to lower her ERA on the year to 3.33.
Junior Carolyn Wilmes (Evansville, Ind./Matre Dei) picked up the win in the circle, improving to 7-9 on the season after entering the game in relief with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Wilmes stuck out both batters she faced in the seventh, and held Indiana State off the board in the eighth to secure the victory.
Â
On offense, the Cardinals capitalized on an early ISU miscue as junior second baseman Maddy Labrador (Lexington, S.C./Spartanburg Methodist) reached base on a error by the third baseman to open the game. Labrador proceeded to steal second with one out, before scoring the first run of the game on a RBI single from junior first baseman Danae King (Glendale, Ariz./Phoneix College).
Â
The lead was short-lived, however, as the Sycamores leadoff batter reached base via a walk, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Two batters later, a sacrifice fly evened the score at 1-1.
Â
From there, pitching took over and the teams battled to a 1-1 tie through seven innings.
Â
With the international tiebreaker in effect in the eighth, Labrador was placed on second and advanced to third on a groundout to first by senior center fielder Rachel Houck (Greenfield, Ind./Louisville). That play proved critical, as freshman third baseman Janae Hogg (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) drove the next pitch to deep center field for what proved to be a game-winning sacrifice fly.
Â
Indiana State moved its placed runner to second on a sacrifice bunt to open the bottom half of the frame, but Wilmes was able to keep her there by forcing a pair of groundout to Hogg at third to end the game.
Â
It's all Mid-American Conference play for the Ball State softball team from here, starting Friday when East Division leader Miami visits the Softball Field at First Merchants Ballpark Complex for a scheduled 3 p.m. first pitch. The two teams will then play a Saturday doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
