Five-Run Third Inning Propels Butler to 7-3 Win
March 28, 2017 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Butler Bulldogs broke open a scoreless game with five runs in the third inning on the way to a 7-3 win over the Ball State baseball team Tuesday afternoon at First Merchants Ballpark Complex.
With the win, the Bulldogs (17-7) push their winning streak to six games. The Cardinals (11-14) have now dropped five straight games at home.
Gehrig Parker provided the big hit of the game, a bases clearing triple all the way to the wall in center field to make the score 4-0 in the third. He added a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to finish with four RBIs.
Ball State had its opportunities to put runs up on the board but left the bases loaded in the second, third and eighth innings. The Cardinals left 12 runners on base against the Bulldogs.
Senior Sean Kennedy equaled a season high with three hits to lead Ball State. The infielder has tallied 10 hits over his last five games.
Butler reliever Danny Pobereyko picked up the win thanks to tossing 3.1 innings and holding the home team to just two hits.
This was just the third meeting between the two teams in Muncie since 2006.
The Cardinals conclude their eight-game home stand this weekend with a conference series against Ohio. Game one of three is scheduled for Friday, March 31 at 3 p.m.
