Women's Tennis Starts MAC Play 2-0 With Win At NIU

DeKalb, Ill. - The Ball State women's tennis team (14-2, 2-0 MAC) completed its two-match weekend sweep to start Mid-American Conference action play when it registered a 6-1 victory at Northern Illinois (6-10, 0-2 MAC) Sunday afternoon in DeKalb.
The 2-0 MAC start marks the second-straight season the Cardinals have opened league action with a 2-0 ledger. Last year Ball State only suffered one loss in conference play.
Ball State came out of the gates strong to start the match as they dominated doubles play against the Huskies. The Cardinals team of Audrey Berger and Rebecca Herrington downed Brodie Walker and Meghan Montgomerie 6-1 at the No. 3 positions. Carmen Blanco and Peyton Gollhofer clinched the opening point for Ball State with a 6-1 win over Evelyn Youel and Pauline Chawafambria on court three.
Berger came off the court first in singles action after her 6-4, 6-0 defeat over Youel at the No. 5 spot to give the Cardinals the 2-0 advantage. At No. 4 singles, Isabelle Dohanics captured a 6-3, 6-2 win against Abigail Dekkinga and then teammate Blanco soon followed with a straight set win over Adey Osabuohien on the top court. Blanco took Osabuohien down 6-2, 6-3, her win clinched the match for the Cardinals. With Ball State up 4-0, Toni Ormond and Rosalinda Calderon both earned wins on their respective courts to make the score 6-0. Raven Neely took a three set thriller from Gollhofer for the Huskies lone point of the day.
The Ball State women's tennis team continues Mid-American Conference play at home Friday against Bowling Green. The match is slated for a 1 p.m. start at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center, weather permitting.
