Women's Tennis Sweeps Bowling Green In MAC Play Friday
March 31, 2017 | Women's Tennis
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State women's tennis team remains undefeated in Mid-American Conference action after its 7-0 sweep over Bowling Green Friday afternoon at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 15-2 overall and 3-0 in league action while the Falcons fall to 5-10 for the year and 1-2 in MAC play.
The Cardinals began doubles play strong today against the Falcons taking early leads on courts one and two. Bowling Green only had five participants competing in today's contest, so by default both teams didn't play at the No. 3 position. At No. 2 doubles, Carmen Blanco and Peyton Gollhofer started their doubles match with a quick 3-1 edge over Polina Radeva and Ayumi Sasaki but the Falcons quickly came back to tie the score 3-3. Same thing happened on the top court, as Audrey Berger alongside teammate Isabelle Dohanics had an early edge over Paula Comella and Marharita-Sophia Tavpash but Bowling Green answered to also knot their match at 3-3. After that, it continued to be a tight race on both courts. Everytime the Cardinals would take the lead the Falcons would tie the score again on both courts. But Berger and Blanco were resiliant and managed to overcome a tiebreaker situation to clinch the doubles point and win their match 7-6 (7-5).
Ball State managed to take first set wins on all five courts to start singles action. Rebecca Herrington put the Cardinals up 2-0 after her 6-0, 6-2 take down over Emily Witt at the No. 5 position. Gollhofer followed suit when she registered a 6-1, 6-2 victory on court two over Tavpash which clinched the match for the Cardinals. Toni Ormond along with fellow Cardinals Dohanics and this week's MAC Player of the Week Carmen Blanco, rounded out the singles victories for Ball State.
The Ball State women's tennis team continues Mid-American Conference action at home Sunday when it hosts Buffalo. First serve is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and will be played at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center, weather permitting.
