Wilmes Leads Softball to 3-0 Shutout of Northern Kentucky
March 19, 2017 | Softball
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Junior pitcher Carolyn Wilmes (Evansville, Ind./Matre Dei) extended her shutout streak to 14.2 innings in guiding the Ball State softball team to a 3-0 win over Northern Kentucky Sunday afternoon to end play in the SIUE Tournament.
Â
In guiding the Cardinals (14-16) to their third straight victory and helping the team finished the weekend with an unblemished 3-0 record, Wilmes held the Norse (5-15) to just two hits for her second career complete game shutout. She struck out four batters in the game and retired 14 consecutive NKU players from the second to the seventh innings, aided in part by a third-inning double play.
Â
Over her last five appearances, Wilmes has allowed just three earned runs over 15.2 innings of work for a team-leading 1.34 ERA over the span. She has compiled a 3-0 record during the run, including her first two career complete game shutouts. She has also struck out a team-high 15 batters while issuing just six walks.
Â
On the offensive side in Sunday's win over the Norse, junior second baseman Maddy Labrador (Lexington, S.C./Spartanburg Methodist) provided all the run support Wilmes would need, leading off the top of the third with her fourth home run of the season.
Â
Labrador's leadoff home run came immediately after she made one of the most impressive defensive plays of the game, diving for a hard grounder to her right and flipping the ball to first to help Wilmes get out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the second.
Â
The Cardinals went on to add a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh to give the game its final score of 3-0. Sophomore catcher Olivia Huffman (Woodbury, Minn./South Dakota) started the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a Labrador sacrifice bunt. After freshman third baseman Janae Hogg (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) reached base on an error, senior center fielder Rachel Houck (Greenfield, Ind./Louisville) followed with a hard grounder past the NKU first baseman for a RBI single.
Â
Ball State went on to load the bases courtesy of a single through the left side by sophomore designated player Madison Lee (Cerritos, Calif./Cerritos). Senior pinch hitter Amanda Arnett (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) then drove in the game's final run with a sacrifice fly to deep center field.
Â
The Ball State softball team returns to action Wednesday, when it opens the home portion of its 2017 slate with a scheduled 4 p.m. first pitch versus in-state rival Butler. The Cardinals are then scheduled to open league play next weekend, with a three-game series at Buffalo. The teams are set to play a 3 p.m. single game Friday and a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday.
