Softball Outscores Opposition 13-2 in Saturday Sweep
March 18, 2017 | Softball
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - - Behind a pair of dominating pitching performances, the Ball State softball team opened play in the SIUE Tournament with wins over host SIUE, 6-1, and in-state rival Butler, 7-1, Saturday afternoon at Cougar Stadium.
Â
In the opener, freshman pitcher Alyssa Rothwell (Ashville, Ohio/Teays Valley) went toe-to-toe with one of the nation's top pitchers in the Cougars' (20-5) Haley Chambers-Book and picked up her second career win after allowing just one run and five hits over 6.0 innings. Rothwell struck out three batters while issuing just one walk.
Â
In the night cap, sophomore pitcher Aeshia Miles (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill) earned her second career complete game victory, allowing just one run and five hits over 7.0 innings of work against the Bulldogs (11-14). She also struck out six of the 31 batters she faced.
Â
While Ball State's (13-16) pitchers were doing work in the circle, its offense did just as well at the plate, out-scoring the opposition 15-2. Seven different Cardinals recorded at least one hit over the two games, with six posting at least two.
Â
Freshman third baseman Janae Hogg (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) and freshman outfielder Haley Dominique (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) led the Cardinals with three hits apiece. Junior first baseman Danae King (Glendale, Ariz./Phoenix College) was one of four Ball State players to record a pair of hits over the two games, while leading the team with four RBI.

GAME 1 RECAP: Ball State 6 – SIUE 1
Facing one of the nation's top pitchers in SIUE's Chambers-Book, the Ball State softball team capitalized on a little early luck to score the game's first run in the top of the third inning.
Â
Junior first baseman Danae King (Glendale, Ariz./Phoenix College) opened the frame with a fly to deep left field which the Cougars' fielder lost in the sun near the warning track allowing King to reach with a double. Sophomore catcher Olivia Huffman (Woodbury, Minn./South Dakota) followed with a nicely executed sacrifice bunt to move freshman pinch runner Tara Morey (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) to third. Junior second baseman Maddy Labrador (Lexington, S.C./Spartanburg Methodist) then drove in the game's first run with a RBI single up the middle.
Â
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Cardinals broke the game open with a five-run fifth. Huffman frustrated Chambers-Book in the inning's first at bat, drawing her team-leading 15th walk of the season before moving to second on a passed ball. Labrador followed with a hard shot through the left side, giving the Cardinals runners on the corners. Senior center fielder Rachel Houck (Greenfield, Ind./Louisville) then drove in the inning's first run with a single up the middle.
Â
The Balls State hit parade continued with a two-run triple from freshman third baseman Janae Hogg (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) to make the score 4-0. Two outs later, back-to-back RBI doubles from freshman left fielder Haley Dominique (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) and junior shortstop Brittany Hopper (Scottsdale, Ariz./Phoenix College) extended Ball State's lead to 6-0.
Â
SIUE would get a run back in the bottom of the fifth courtesy of a Tess Eby solo home run, but Rothwell recovered with a strikeout and forced a fly out to end the inning. Rothwell went on to hold the Cougars off the board in the sixth, while junior pitcher Carolyn Wilmes (Evansville, Ind./Matre Dei) did the same in the seventh to seal the victory.
Â
In picking up her second career pitching victory, Rothwell limited the SIUE offense to five hits and one earned run over 6.0 innings of work. She also struck out three batters while issuing just one walk to a team which received votes in the latest ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25. Wilmes struck out one of the four batters she faced, while holding the Cougars hitless in the final inning.
Â
GAME 2 RECAP: Ball State 7 – Butler 1
After suffering a 9-1 (6 inn.) loss to the Bulldogs last season, the Cardinals came out determined to reverse the outcome in Saturday's nightcap, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning.
Â
Houck started the rally by reaching base on a one-out error, and after Hogg singled through the left side, stole her team-leading 10th base of the season. Sophomore designated player Madison Lee (Cerritos, Calif./Cerritos) then drove in the first run of the inning with a RBI single to left field.
Â
After Dominique reached base on a fielder's choice and Hopper walked to load the bases, King cleared them with her second double of the day to give the hosts on the scoreboard a 4-0 advantage.
Â
Miles took control of the contest from there, holding the Bulldogs off the scoreboard for the next five innings, including a perfect sixth.
Â
The Ball State offense meanwhile, extended its lead to 7-0 with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Dominique opened the inning with a single, while Hopper followed with a double to give Ball State a pair of base runners in scoring position. King then drove in her fourth RBI of the game and reached on a fielder's choice.
Â
Leading 5-0 with runners on the corners, senior third baseman Amanda Arnett (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) executed a perfect squeeze bunt to push Ball State ahead 6-0. After a walk to Huffman and a double play, Houck drove in the Cardinals' final run of the game with a single through the left side.
Â
Miles retired the first two batters of seventh, before a walk and pair of singles helped Butler score its lone run of the game. However, Miles recovered to end the game with a strikeout.
