February 04, 2017 | Women's Basketball
OXFORD, Ohio – The Ball State women's basketball team (16-7, 9-2 MAC) closed Mid-American Conference action this week with another road win after defeating Miami (7-16, 1-9 MAC) 81-60 Saturday afternoon in Millett Hall.
For the second-straight game sophomore guard Destiny Washington led the Cardinals in scoring with 21 points and grabbed six boards. Senior center Renee Bennett registered 18 points scoring all 16 in the second half while junior forward Moriah Monaco ended the day with 17 points.
Although the stat sheet was similar in most categories today, it was the Cardinals who took better care of the ball only committing 11 turnovers while forcing the RedHawks to 17 miscues.
Both teams got off to slow starts in the opening minutes of the ball game. Bennett scored a quick basket to give Ball State the early 2-0 lead over the RedHawks but the Cardinals couldn't score much after that. For the second straight contest Washington then came off the bench to give Ball State's offense the boost it needed. After Washington's jumper at the 3:35 mark, the Cardinals went on a 17-5 run to take a 24-7 lead over Miami at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Cardinals had built an 18 point advantage (33-15) by the 4:55 mark after baskets from Frazier, freshman center Morgan Glatczak, senior guard Calyn Hosea, senior guard Jill Morrison and Monaco. But Miami did not go away quietly and began to pick up the pace in the second quarter outscoring Ball State 23-to-15 to cut the Cardinals once 18 point lead to nine (39-30) at the half.
After leaving the game early in the first half due to foul trouble, Bennett came back in the third quarter scoring 10 of the Cardinals 17 points. Miami continued to play close to Ball State in the third stanza but would still trail by eight 56-48 heading into the final period.
Back-to-back baskets from Washington and Monaco to start the fourth quarter along with layup from Bennett put the Cardinals back up by 15 (63-48) with 7:13 left to play in the game.
Despite how close the RedHawks would get Ball State never lost its composure the remainder of the contest. Miami was playing frustrated towards the end sending multiple Cardinals to the line. Ball State had already reached the bonus by the 5:07 mark, helping the Cardinals regain their first half cushion to go back up by 19 (73-56). Miami was unable to recover from Ball State's strong fourth quarter eventually losing the ball game by 21.
The Ball State women's basketball team returns home Wednesday night for a cross-division match-up against Bowling Green. The contest is slated for a 7 p.m. tipoff in Worthen Arena and can be viewed on ESPN3.
