Marquardt Named MAC West Pitcher of the Week
February 27, 2017 | Baseball
CLEVELAND, Ohio – For the second week in a row, a Ball State baseball player won the Mid-American Conference West Division Pitcher of the Week award as sophomore Evan Marquardt came away with the honors Monday afternoon.
Marquardt, making just his third career start for the Cardinals this past weekend, notched career bests in both innings pitched (7.0) and strikeouts (nine) in the 7-0 win over George Mason on Feb. 25. The right-handed pitcher from Midland, Michigan, retired the first 12 GMU batters before allowing a single to start the fifth inning. Reliever David Current held George Mason off the scoreboard the final two innings to give Ball State its first shutout of the season.
All four Ball State starting pitchers recorded a quality start at the Caravelle Resort Tournament over the weekend. Senior BJ Butler went 7.0 innings and held No. 18 Coastal Carolina to one run on Friday. Marquardt and senior Kevin Marnon (6.0 innings, three runs) kept George Mason in check on Saturday. Finally, junior Colin Brockhouse limited West Virginia to two runs over 8.0 innings on Sunday.
Ball State's team ERA through seven games is 2.76, which ranks second in the league.
Buffalo third baseman Chris Kwitzer (East Player), Ohio pitcher Jake Roehn (East Pitcher) and Western Michigan outfielder Tanner Allison (West Player) were the other award winners this week.
Ball State (4-3) returns to action next weekend when it travels to Florida for the beginning of its spring break trip. The Cardinals will play nine games in Florida and Oregon between March 3 and March 11.
