February 02, 2017 | Track & Field
MUNCIE, Ind. - - After spending the better part of the past two weeks concentrating on training, the Ball State indoor track & field team opens the stretch run to the 2017 Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships by traveling to the Akron Invitational which begins Friday and concludes Saturday.
Â
With three meets remaining until the league's premiere indoor event, Ball State's student-athletes look to improve their standings on the MAC performance list against a field which features athletes from 25 different teams, including seven MAC programs. In addition to the Cardinals and Zips, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Eastern Michigan, Kent State and Ohio are slated to represent the league in Akron over the two-day event.
Â
The opening day of the meet will see the Cardinals compete in just two events, starting at 6:30 p.m. with senior Makelle Skelton (Fort Wayne, Ind./Northrop) in the women's blue long jump. Skelton was a second team All-MAC honoree in the long jump at the 2015 MAC Indoor Championships after placing second with a career-best distance of 5.88m (19-3.5).
Â
The Cardinals conclude the opening day of the meet with three entries in the women's 5000m run, which is scheduled to follow the 8:45 p.m. men's 5000m race.
Â
Ball State opens the second day of the Akron Invitational with action in the women's weight throw at 10:30 a.m. In all, the Cardinals will compete in 12 events Saturday, culminating with the 4x400m relay at approximately 5:40 p.m.
Â
Heading into this weekend's meet, sophomore Regan Lewis (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield-Central) is Ball State's top-ranked student-athlete on the MAC indoor performance list, holding the No. 2 spot in the high jump. Lewis, who has cleared the bar at a career-best height of 1.76m (5-9.25) in each of the last two meets, will go head-to-head against the only MAC athlete ranked ahead of her in Akron's Nikki Manson shortly after 3 p.m. Saturday.
Â
Freshman sprinter Jasmine Harris (Moreland Hills, Ohio/Orange) enters the meet as one of the favorites to win the 60m hurdles, leading all entered racers and ranking third in the MAC with a career-fast time of 8.53 set last time out at the Gladstein Invitational (Jan. 21). The 60m hurdles prelims are scheduled to start around 11:45 a.m. Saturday.
Â
