Track & Field Wins Three Events at Ball State Tune-Up
February 17, 2017 | Track & Field
MUNCIE, Ind. - - In its lone home meet of the indoor season, the Ball State track & field team won three events and recorded a 2-1 dual record Friday evening at the Ball State Tune-Up in the Field Sports Building.
Â
The Cardinals scored head-to-head wins over both Wright State (80-66) and Fort Wayne (83-72), while falling to two-time defending event champion Western Michigan (111-59).
Â
"We accomplished most of what we needed to accomplish tonight," Ball State head coach Brian Etelman said. "With MAC championships coming up next week, we were a little thin in a couple of events so the scoring is not reflective of how good we were today. We had several strong individual performances today, including a great run by Bryeana Byrdsong in the 200m."
Â
Ball State's first event victory of the day came in the high jump, with sophomore sensation Regan Lewis (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield-Central) easily clearing 1.73m on her first attempt. The only competitor to clear greater than 1.58m, Lewis took three shots at the school record of 1.78m, but clipped the bar each time.
Â
The Cardinals also took the opening event on the track, as sophomore Jazmin Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/North College Hill) continued her dominance in the 60m hurdles, easily winning with a time of 8.64.
Â
Ball State also picked up an event win in the meet's longest event, the 3000m run, as freshman Maritza Rodriguez (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis) clocked in with a time of 10:337.17. In fact, Cardinals' runners took the top five places in the event.
Â
Freshman Bryeana Byrdsong (Indianapolis, Ind./Warren Central) also turned in a strong showing in the 200m dash, taking second in 25.05. When converted for track size, the effort currently ranks seventh in the MAC at 24.67.
Â
In addition to the three event wins, Ball State finished the meet with 20 top five finishes and six career-best efforts.
Â
"I think there is a lot of confidence our team can take from today's meet," Etelman added. "At the end of the day, we are healthy heading into next weekend, and that's more important than anything else right now."
Â
Next up for the Ball State track & field team is the 2017 Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships which run Feb. 24-25 at Eastern Michigan's Bowen Field House.
