Track & Field Hosts Final “Tune-Up” Meet Friday

MUNCIE, Ind. - - With one last chance to make some noise before the 2017 Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships, the Ball State track & field team looks to take advantage of the friendly confines of the Field Sports Building when it hosts the Ball State Tune-Up starting at 5 p.m. Friday (Feb. 17).
Action begins with field events, followed by track events starting at 6:30 p.m. For the second-straight season, the four-team field features the Cardinals, IPFW, MAC rival Western Michigan and Wright State.
Friday's meet will also mark the second consecutive season the Ball State Tune-Up has featured triple dual scoring. Last season, the Cardinals earned a 2-1 dual record at the meet after winning seven of the 14 events contested. Ball State's student-athletes also collected a pair of MAC automatic qualifying marks and 11 career-best performances over the course of the meet.
Ball State enters the Tune-Up with four student-athletes already locked into the MAC Championships. Last weekend, sophomore sprinter Peyton Stewart (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) led the Cardinals at the Chipotle Marshall Invitational and climbed to third on the MAC performance list by winning the 60m dash in a career-fast time of 7.52.
Sophomore Jazmin Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/North College Hill) and freshman Jasmine Harris (Moreland Hills, Ohio/Orange) continue to be two of the league's top hurdlers, entering the weekend ranked third in the league with identical career-best times of 8.53.
Harris also climbed to 11th on the MAC performance list with a time of 24.86 in the 200m dash at last weekend's Chipotle Marshall Invitational, and is currently 14th in the league in the 60m dash at 7.67. An automatic qualifier in the hurdles, Harris enters the final weekend of the regular season with the potential to qualify in the league meet in all three events.
Sophomore Regan Lewis (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield-Central) is the highest ranked Ball State student-athlete entering the weekend, holding second in the high jump with a league automatic qualifying effort of 1.76m (5-9.25). Lewis, who is currently 41st nationally in the event, can set a track record if she can clear a career-best 1.77m (5-9.75)-or-better at the meet.
Freshman sprinter Bryeana Byrdsong (Indianapolis, Ind./Warren Central) is also looking solidify her spot in the MAC Championships, entering the Ball State Tune-Up ranked 13th in the league in the 60m dash (7.66) and 15th 200m dash (24.94).
Freshman distance runner Brooke Talhelm (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) and sprinter Gabby Sims (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) round out Ball State's top-ranked athletes on the track, holding down 15th in the 800m run (2:14.08) and 20th in the 400m dash (57.04), respectively.
In the field events, freshman Kelsey Walters (Troy, Ohio/Troy) enters Friday's meet ranked 20th in the shot put (12.85m/42-2), while junior Adrienne Mayfield (Zion, Ill./Zion-Benton Township) is 22nd in the weight throw (15.78m / 51-9.25).
