
Washington Scores Career High 25 Points In WBB's Win At Akron

AKRON, Ohio – The Ball State women's basketball team (15-7, 8-2 MAC) rebounded from its loss Saturday with an impressive 90-63 road victory over Akron (9-11, 2-7 MAC) Wednesday night in James A. Rhodes Arena. With the win, Ball State remains undefeated against its cross-division match-ups.
Sophomore guard Destiny Washington led all players with a career best 25 points off of an impressive 11-of-13 shooting from the field, while also pulling down nine rebounds. Junior forward Moriah Monaco continued her double digit scoring for the Cardinals with 15 points and teammate senior center Renee Bennett added 13. Junior guard Frannie Frazier rounded out the double digit scoring for Ball State with 11.
For the game, Ball State out rebounded Akron, 43-to-25 while scoring 44 points in the paint. The Cardinals bench also contributed to the victory scoring 43 points combined for the game. Ball State's hot shooting hand continues this season as the Cardinals shot 52.4 percent from the field while holding Akron to 38.9 percent from the floor.
The Cardinals 21-point halftime lead was too much for the Zips to overcome in the second half. Senior guard Calyn Hosea's layup at the 9:36 mark of the fourth quarter gave Ball State a 28-point cushion (68-40). The Cardinals continued to lead by 28 with 6:12 left on the clock. The closest the Zips could get to the Cardinals the remainder of the game was 24, which occurred at the 5:20 mark off of a 3-point basket from Akron's Alli Ball.
Ball State used its bench for the last few minutes of the game and they too scored some points for the Cardinals it was sophomore guard Nakeya Penny's 3-pointer with just over two minutes to play that gave Ball State its largest lead of the game, 88-57.
Both teams had strong starts in the opening minutes of the ball game. The contest was tied 10-10 with 5:23 left in the first quarter before the Cardinals began to pull away quickly and closed the period with a 12-5 run. The scoring spree put Ball State ahead of the Zips, 22-15. Monaco (9) and Washington (9) made up for 18 of the Cardinals 22 points in the first stanza.
Ball State started the second quarter at a fast pace after Washington scored back-to-back baskets with less than a minute shaved off the clock. By the 2:48 mark, the Cardinals had five different players that had scored at least four or more points. Ball State outscored Akron 26-to-12 in the second period to take a 48-27 lead over the Zips at intermission.
Washington proved to be the spark the Cardinals needed, scoring 17-points in the first half, just one shy of her career high.
The Ball State women's basketball team continues Mid-American Conference cross-division action when it plays the Miami RedHawks in Millett Hall, Saturday at noon. The game will be aired live on ESPN3.
