Men’s Hoops Flies Over North Florida for Sixth Straight Win
December 19, 2017 | Men's Basketball
Cardinals lock down defensively in 79-65 victory to remain unbeaten at home
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Trey Moses and Tahjai Teague each turned in double-doubles Tuesday as the Ball State men's basketball team ran its winning streak to six games.
Playing for the first time in 10 days, the Cardinals defeated North Florida 79-65 behind a balanced offense, better defense and some highlight-reel dunks.
"I thought it was a really good win for our team," Ball State head coach James Whitford said. "I thought our defense was very focused. We didn't shoot the ball particularly well, and I thought we struggled when they switched defenses on us, but I was really proud of our defense. I thought our half-court defense was exceptional."
Moses, now back in full form, led the way with 15 points, 13 rebounds and five assists. He was 7 of 9 from the floor. The junior big man, who has 11 assists over the past two games, helped the Cardinals (7-4) record a season-high 25 helpers as a team.
Teague finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Kyle Mallers (14 points) and Tayler Persons (13) also scored in double figures. Every Ball State player that saw action in the game found the points, rebounds and assists columns on the stat sheet.
Teague and Jeremie Tyler generated the biggest roars from the Worthen Arena crowd. Tyler snagged an alley-oop pass from Jontrell Walker with one hand and threw it down, while Teague got out on a fastbreak and dunked over 6-foot-8 Noah Horchler.
Tyler's dunk capped a 13-0 run that gave Ball State a double-digit lead late in the first half, while Teague's ignited a 9-0 spurt that regained control for the Cardinals after North Florida had cut a 19-point lead all the way to five.
"It was really three plays in a row," Whitford said. "We knew it would be a game of runs because of their propensity to shoot 3's. We went on a 9-0 run after that timeout, which was great for us."
Horchler led North Florida (5-9) with 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Ivan Gandia-Rosa had 13 points and 10 assists.
North Florida entered the game attempting more 3-pointers per game than all but three teams in the country and making more than all but six. The Ospreys finished the night 8 for 27 from beyond the arc.
Ball State made just 6 of 20 from 3-point range but continued to connect at a high rate inside the arc. The Cardinals came into the night shooting nearly 63 percent from 2-point range during the winning streak and hit 27 of 47 in this game.
Ball State beat North Florida for the second year in a row after handing the Ospreys a 73-68 defeat last season in Jacksonville.
The Cardinals, now 5-0 at Worthen Arena, will continue their six-game home stand Friday with a 7 p.m. tip against Jackson State.
