Cardinals set to welcome Yianni Kostouros, Joey Ranieri in 2018
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State men's golf program signed two of the top junior golfers in the state of Indiana to national letters of intent this week.
The Cardinals will welcome Yianni Kostouros (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point HS) and Joey Ranieri (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville HS) to the program next fall.
"We are really excited to add Joey and Yianni to the Ball State golf family," head coach Mike Fleck said. "These are two of the state's best, and we are very fortunate to attract both to Ball State University. They are driven, tenacious, talented and competitive student-athletes who will strengthen our team, and I love the fact they have stayed competitive with their tournament schedules after their commitments to the program.
"Joey and Yianni are the type of young men we want representing this institution, and I'm anxious to follow their paths leading to their arrival on campus next fall."
Yianni Kostouros
Kostouros has qualified for the IHSAA state finals in each of the past two years and will play his senior season at Crown Point in the spring. He was conference and regional medalist as a junior last spring, setting the scoring record at the Duneland Athletic Conference Tournament with a round of 67.
Kostouros was named the Chicago Post Tribune Golfer of the Year in 2016, the same year he was selected to participate in the Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach. Within the past calendar year, he has won the RMJGT Tournament of Champions and placed in the top 10 in Golfweek Junior Tour events at The Fort and Notre Dame. He won his age group in the event at The Fort last month.
Kostouros was the 2013 Greece Junior national champion in Athens. He also played two years of varsity soccer at Crown Point.
Joey Ranieri
Ranieri has competed in the state finals in each of the past three years for Zionsville. He has finished in the top 25 all three years, including top-10 results in each of the past two seasons. He was runner-up at his sectional last year and has twice finished third at the regional level. He will play his senior season for Zionsville in the spring.
Ranieri has 14 top-10 finishes in 17 junior events over the past year, including wins at the Amelia National Junior Shootout in January and the Golfweek Junior Tour event at the Golf Club of Dublin last month. He placed fourth at the Indiana Boys State Junior Championship over the summer.
An all-state selection last year in high school, Ranieri is currently rated as the seventh-best junior player in the state of Indiana.
