The Ball State soccer team continues its pursuit of a Mid-American Conference Tournament championship Friday in Kent, Ohio.
Â
The No. 2 seed Cardinals are set for a semifinal matchup against No. 3 seed Toledo, with the winner advancing to meet either Kent State or Bowling Green in Sunday's championship game.
Â
Ball State (11-6-3) reached this point by avenging its regular season loss to Northern Illinois with a 2-1 victory over the Huskies in the quarterfinals. Toledo (10-7-3) also won by a 2-1 score in the quarters, defeating Western Michigan.
Â
Friday's matchup is a battle of the top two teams in the MAC West Division. Ball State won the division for the third straight year, finishing six points ahead of Toledo.
Â
The Cardinals played the Rockets to a 1-1 draw on the road in the opening weekend of conference play this year. BSU held a 21-4 advantage in shots in that game, and junior midfielder Lauren Roll scored the equalizing goal in the 83rd minute.
Â
Roll also scored in the quarterfinal victory over NIU and owns four goals for the year to rank among the team leaders with sophomore midfielder Julia Elvbo and sophomore forward Sam Kambol. Eleven different players have scored for Ball State's balanced offensive attack.
Â
Â
The Cardinals have remained stout defensively this year, ranking second as a team during MAC play with a 0.61 goals against average. Senior goalkeepers Tristin Stuteville and Alyssa Heintschel formed the top goalkeeping tandem in the league, ranking second and third in GAA during conference play.
Â
Ball State will look to defend a Toledo team that ranked second in scoring in league play with 18 goals. Hannah Scafaria leads the Rockets with eight goals for the year.
