Cummings Leads Cross Country at NCAA Great Lakes Regional

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - - Led to the finish line by sophomore Hannah Cummings (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline), the Ball State cross country team closed the 2017 season Friday morning at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional hosted by Indiana State at the Lavern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute.

In her first NCAA regional appearance, Cummings paced the Cardinals to the finish line for the third time this season by placing 118th among scored runners with a 6K time of 22.49.0.

Sophomore Brooke Talhelm (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) was Ball State's second-fastest runner Friday morning, her best finish relative to her teammates this season, crossing the line in 23.12.1 to earn 141st among scored runners.

Not far behind was freshman Cayla Eckenroth (Novi, Mich./Northville) who clocked in at 23:14.4 in her NCAA regional debut to place 144th among scored runners.

Rounding out Ball State's five scored runners were sophomore Maritza Rodriguez (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis) and redshirt sophomore Stephanie McElhaney (Huntington, Ind./Huntington North). Rodriguez placed 163rd with a time of 23:44.0 in her first regional, while McElhaney came in half a second later to place 165th at 23:44.5 in her second regional.

Also competing for the Cardinals were senior Jessica Bryzek (Brownsburg, Ind./Indiana Academy) and sophomore Peyton Kneadler (Monticello, Ind./Twin Lakes). In her final cross country meet, Bryzek placed 179th among scored runners with a time of 24:06.1, while Kneadler clocked in at 24:13.4 to place 181st in her first regional race.

With four of Ball State's seven runners making their NCAA Great Lakes Regional debut, the Cardinals placed 26th among the 31-team field with a score of 731 points. Michigan won the event with its five scored runners combining for 71 points, while Mid-American Conference Champion Eastern Michigan once again lead the league with a fourth-place score of 146 points.

Indiana's Katherine Receveur was the individual race winner, clocking in at 20:34.9 to finish four seconds ahead of Michigan's Gina Sereno in second at 20:38.9.

Next up for Ball State's distance runners will be the indoor track & field season which begins Dec. 2 at the Fort Wayne Mastodon Opener.
