MUNCIE, Ind. - -Junior outside Brooklyn Goodsel (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) tied her career high with 21 kills, but it was not enough for the Ball State women's volleyball team which suffered a hard-fought 3-2 (23-25, 25-20, 19-25, 25-19, 15-13) setback to Northern Illinois in Mid-American Conference play Saturday night at Worthen Arena.
The Cardinals (12-7; 4-2 MAC) looked poised to escape Worthen Arena with the win, taking a 2-1 lead in the match and playing to an 11-11 tie in the fourth set. Junior outside attacker Ellie Dunn (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) reached double-digit kills for the third consecutive match, logging 13 on the night. She also tallied four digs and a pair of block assists.
Sophomore middle Sydnee VanBeek (St. John, Ind./Illiana Christian) rounded out a trio of Cardinals with double figure kills with 10. She also hit .364 (10-2-22) and collected a match-high seven total blocks.
Redshirt junior Avery Devoe (Canton, Mass./Canton) finished the match as Ball State's top attacker, with seven kills and a team-high .455 (7-2-11) attack percentage.
Sophomore setter Amber Seaman (Indianapolis, Ind./Brebeuf) guided the Ball State offense to a .218 (61-23-174) attack percentage, logging her 11th double-double of the year with 54 assists and 16 digs. She also tied her career high with four service aces, while her lone kill of the night gave Ball State the 25-19 third set victory.
Overall, four Cardinals finished the match with double figure digs, led by 21 from sophomore libero Kate Avila (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown). Freshman defensive specialist Grace Nelson (Bennington, Neb./Elkhorn) added 11, to go along with the 16 from Seaman and 11 from Goodsel. As a team, the Cardinals held an 80 to 76 edge in digs.
Four Huskies finished the match with double figure kills, led by 21 from Kaylee Martin. Anna Brereton finished the night with a match-best 22 digs. Overall, Northern Illinois hit .217 (62-24-175) on the night.
