Team Effort Leads Volleyball Past Kent State
October 13, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
KENT, Ohio - - The Ball State women's volleyball team was able to capitalize on its depth Friday night, getting contributions from a variety of sources to earn a 3-1 (25-19, 17-25, 25-19, 27-25) victory over Kent State in Mid-American Conference play at the M.A.C. Center.
In improving to 13-7 overall and 5-2 in MAC play, the Cardinals snapped a three-match losing streak to the Golden Flashes (4-14; 2-5 MAC) and picked up their third win in the last four matches played at the M.A.C Center.
While the Cardinals received contributions from a variety of sources to secure the win, sophomore middle Sydnee VanBeek (St. John, Ind./Illiana Christian) turned in the steadiest performance of the night with career-highs of 14 kills and five digs. She also secured a pair of block assists, served up one of the team's five aces and hit .242 (14-6-33) on the night.
While five of VanBeek's 14 kills came in the final set, it was the play of senior opposite Jessica Lindsey (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) in the final frame which helped secure the match. After coming off the bench late in the third set, Lindsey scored five of her six kills in the final set, including a late pair which tied the score at 23 after the Cardinals trailed 23-20.
From there, junior defensive specialist Lauren Schreiner (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) came up with her first kill of the season to give Ball State match point. While Kent State scored the next two points, reaching set point at 25-24, an untimely attack error evened the score again.
Redshirt junior Meg Starling (Hopkinsville, Ky./University Heights) followed with her last of a career-high five solo blocks to give Ball State its second chance to win the match at 26-25. The block came up huge again on the final point, as KSU's Kelsey Bittinger was forced to go around the block of Starling and junior outside attacker Ellie Dunn (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) and hit the ball out of play to end the match.
Overall, Starling finished the night with a match-high seven total blocks and was credited with four kills on 12 swings. Dunn reached double digit kills for the fourth consecutive match with 13, to go along with a career-high nine digs and a block assist.
With the match even at one set apiece, Dunn was a huge catalyst in the third set, smashing seven of the Cardinals 18 kills in the frame while hitting .375 (7-1-16). She also secured six of her nine digs in the third.
Overall, the Cardinals' offense connected for a .209 (57-20-177) attack percentage for the night, carried by a .351 (14-1-37) rate of success in the opening frame and a .312 (18-3-48) effort in the third. Sophomore setter Amber Seaman (Indianapolis, Ind./Brebeuf) dished out 44 assists on Ball State's 57 kills and also served up three of the team's five aces.
Defensively, the Cardinals collected a season-high 94 digs with four players reaching double figures. Sophomore libero Kate Avila (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown) led the squad with a season-high 28 digs, including 10 in the final frame.
Junior outside attacker Brooklyn Goodsel (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) was next for the Cardinals with a season-high tying 17 digs. Goodsel also scored eight kills and recorded a service ace.
Schreiner added 12 digs and a perfect reception percentage (21 for 21) to her pivotal fourth set kill, while senior Bailey Baumer (Batesville, Ind./Batesville) recorded a season-high 11 digs in her first start of the season to round out Ball State's defensive leaders.
Overall, the Cardinals' defense limited the Kent State attack to a .168 (52-22-179) attack percentage, including a .080 (11-7-50) effort in the third and a .088 (13-8-57) rate of success in the fourth. Bittinger and Lexi Mantas tied for team-high honors with 13 kills, while Challen Geraghty led five Golden Flashes in double figures with 21 digs.
The Ball State women's volleyball team closes out its brief two-match road swing Saturday (Oct. 14), with a 7 p.m. first serve at Ohio in a match which will be broadcast on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app.
