Yela Ziswiler Named MAC Offensive Player of the Week

Sophomore scored both goals in last week’s MAC West-clinching victory
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Yela Ziswiler of the Ball State soccer team was named the Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Week.

Ziswiler scored two goals of her own and led a Ball State defensive effort that allowed just one goal in 200 minutes on the road last week. The sophomore center back from Switzerland tallied both goals in Ball State's 2-1 victory Thursday at Buffalo as the Cardinals clinched their third straight MAC West Division championship.

She notched the first one on a rebound after a corner kick to give BSU a halftime lead. Buffalo tied the game on a penalty kick in the second half, but Ziswiler answered back less than two minutes later when she headed home another BSU corner in the 79th minute for the game-winner.

Ziswiler and the Cardinals did not surrender a goal during the run of play in either game last week. She helped BSU post a shutout through 110 minutes in a scoreless draw Sunday at Akron for the Cardinals' fifth shutout in the past seven games.

Zisilwer played a key role as Ball State climbed within one point of first-place Kent State in its chase for a third consecutive regular season title. She played every minute for the week and has yet to come off the field this season.

This is the second weekly MAC award of Ziswiler's career. The 2016 MAC All-Freshman Team selection was named the league's defensive player of the week once last season.

Ball State will close out the regular season Thursday with a 3 p.m. kickoff at Miami. The Cardinals will be either the No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the conference tournament and will host a quarterfinal game Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Briner Sports Complex.
