Men’s Golf Racks up Birdies on Day 1 of ODU/OBX
October 22, 2017 | Men's Golf
Jack Cunningham leads the team in a tie for eighth after an opening 68
POWELL'S POINT, N.C. -- Jack Cunningham fired the lowest round of his young freshman season Sunday to lead the Ball State men's golf team into contention on day one of the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate.
Cunningham made five birdies en route to a 3-under par 68, one of a trio of under-par rounds for the Cardinals on the tournament's opening day.
Michael Makris and Timothy Wiseman each carded 1-under rounds of 70, and Ball State also counted a 72 from Michael VanDeventer. Makris made six birdies of his own, as the Cardinals led the field with 22 of them as a team (at least four for each player).
It all added up to a team score of 280 (-4), good enough for third place out of 18 teams at Kilmaric Golf Club with two rounds left to play.
Defending tournament champion Campbell leads the way at 270 (-14), while tournament host Old Dominion is second at 279 (-5).
ODU's Chad Hess went the lowest on day one with a 64 to grab a two-shot lead.
The tournament's second round will be played Monday. Ball State will tee off with the leaders starting at 10 a.m.
