Makris Leads Men’s Golf to Open Crooked Stick Invite
October 16, 2017 | Men's Golf
Cardinals ninth among 12-team field with final round coming Tuesday
CARMEL, Ind. -- Michael Makris birdied three of his first five holes Monday and went on to make nine of them on the day, the second-most of any player in the field through 36 holes at the Crooked Stick Invitational.
Makris led the Ball State men's golf team with rounds of 74 and 70 on the opening day of the event. He is tied for 13th place at even par among a strong field at Crooked Stick Golf Club.
The Cardinals are ninth out of 12 teams at 591 (+15) with one round yet to play. The tournament features seven teams rated among the top 85 in the latest Golfweek rankings.
Purdue leads the way after the opening day with a two-round total of 568 (-8). A pair of SEC teams -- Georgia (-3) and Kentucky (-2) -- are the Boilermakers' closest chasers.
Purdue's Timmy Hildebrand and Indiana's Evan Yakubov share the individual lead at 5 under par.
Makris would be right there with them if not for a three-hole stretch he played 5 over par in the middle of his first round. But the senior recovered nicely from that stretch and fought to get back under par during the day's second round.
Freshman Jack Cunningham played steady throughout the day and is the second Ball State player on the leaderboard in a tie for 34th at 148 (+4). Timothy Wiseman (+6), Michael VanDeventer (+7) and Johnny Watts (+8) are not far behind.
The final round of the Crooked Stick Invitational will be played Tuesday. The Cardinals will go off the 10th tee with South Carolina and Indiana, starting at 9 a.m.
