Men’s Volleyball Edges Out Princeton in Season Opener

HONOLULU, Hawaii – The 15th ranked Ball State men's volleyball team opened up the 2017 season at the Outrigger Invitational with a victory over Princeton Thursday night, 3-2.
Freshman Matt Szews had a great first collegiate outing by leading the team with 19 kills. Junior Mitch Weiler had 15 kills, three block assists and one assist. Preseason All-MIVA senior Brendan Surane tallied 13 kills, one solo block and four block assists. Junior Matt Walsh, also a preseason All-MIVA selection, finished with seven kills, a .600 attack percentage and a team-high seven block assists. Defensively, freshman Nick Lavanchy posted a match-high 15 digs.
Set one went to the Cardinals, 25-17. Szews had five kills while Surane had three in the opening set. Ball State won the set with a .500 attack percentage.
Princeton was able to take sets two and three in very close scores, 25-22 and 25-23.
The Cardinals rallied to even the match with a 25-19 score in set four. Ball State had 17 kills and a .464 attack percentage in the fourth set. Ball State fought off five match points in the deciding set before winning the final three points to win the match. Surane put away the final two points after a block by Weiler and Walsh evened the score at 19-all.
Ball State finished up its season opener with a total of 64 kills, 14.5 blocks and a .306 attack percentage. The Cardinals will look to pick up another victory today as they face Erskine in their second game of the Outrigger Invitational. Match time is set for 9 p.m. ET.
