January 03, 2017 | Men's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State men's volleyball team is set to open up its regular season this week in Honolulu, Hawaii in the Outrigger Resorts Invitational.
The Cardinals will take on Princeton on Thursday, Jan. 5, at 9 p.m. ET in their season opener. The last time Ball State took on Princeton was in the 2015 season. The Cardinals took the victory in that contest, 3-2. Senior Mike Scannell tallied 13 kills in that match while senior Brendan Surane recorded six block assists and two aces.
On Friday, Jan. 6, Ball State will face Erskine. Match time is set for 9 p.m. ET. The Erskine Flying Fleet finished the 2016 season as Conference Carolina champions and also made their second NCAA Championship appearance in the last three years.
The Cardinals will close out their time in Hawaii on Saturday, Jan. 7 when they take on the University of Hawaii at midnight Eastern time. Ball State beat the Rainbow Warriors in the previous meeting, 3-0, in the 2011 Outrigger Invitational.
The Cardinals finished the 2016 season with a 20-9 record and a 12-4 mark in conference action. The Cardinals lost three seniors at the end of last season, but just one starter in setter Hiago Garchet. Ball State added seven newcomers to this year's squad along with two redshirt freshmen.
Ball State was voted 15th among all Division I and Division II schools in the America Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) preseason national rankings and fourth in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) preseason poll.
