Women's Tennis Splits Opening Day In North Carolina
January 21, 2017 | Women's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina - The Ball State women's tennis team split its opening day of spring action when it fell 7-0 to North Carolina in the morning match and then rebounded in their afternoon's competition after posting a 7-0 sweep over North Carolina Central University.
Although the Cardinals lost to the Tarheels they still competed in both doubles and singles action. Audrey Berger teamed up with Julia Sbircea in the doubles potion and was the first match off the court falling to Hayley Carter and Alex Graham by a score of 6-1. North Carolina claimed the doubles point after Rebecca Herrington and teammate Rosalinda Calderon dropped a 6-2 decision to Sra Daavettila and Rachael James-Baker on court three. Despite dropping the doubles point, Carmen Blanco and Toni Ormond showed promise at the No. 2 spot, taking three games from Makenna Jones and Cassandra Vazquez.
In singles action, North Carolina took all six matches from the Cardinals. Ormond did take her opponent the No. 44 ranked Alexa Graham to three sets at the No. 3 singles position. Ormond dropped the first set 6-1 but fought back in the second stanza winning, 7-5. She then dropped the third set 1-0 (10-2).
The afternoon cap was much different than the morning session. Ball State took all three doubles matches from North Carolina Central University and then went on to sweep all six points in singles play.
In doubles action, Herrington and Blanco did not give up a game on court three winning 6-0 over Lynsey Cover and Tamara Jeremic. Both Ball State twosomes on courts two and three did not give up a point in their respective positions.
All six Cardinals took their opponents down in straight sets during singles play. Ormond, Isabelle Dohanics, Berger and Calderon each won a set without giving up a game.
The Ball State women's tennis team continues spring action in the state of North Carolina when it plays against UNC-Greensboro sunday at 9 a.m. in Chapel Hill.
